What is a D-SNP (Dual Special Needs Plan)?

A D-SNP, or Dual Special Needs Plan, is a type of Medicare Advantage plan built for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid (often called “dual eligible”). These plans coordinate your Medicare and Medicaid benefits in one place and are designed around the needs of people who have both.

Who qualifies and how they work

To join a D-SNP you generally need to have both Medicare and Medicaid. D-SNPs often include extra benefits and usually include prescription drug coverage, and they typically have very low or $0 plan premiums because Medicaid helps cover costs. Eligibility and benefits vary by state and county, and your Medicaid status is checked periodically.

Special enrollment rules

People who are dual eligible often have more opportunities to change plans during the year than other beneficiaries, but the exact rules and timing matter. Because these plans interact with both programs, many people work with a licensed agent who handles dual-eligible plans, or get free help from their SHIP or Medicaid office. For all of your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
